Better light at the bathroom mirror
Quick answer
A vanity light should light your face evenly from the front, not cast shadows from above. A wide fixture above the mirror or an LED mirror with built-in lighting gives the best result.

Many Monterey Park bathrooms still have old Hollywood-strip lights or a single fixture.
Fixture size
A vanity light should be about two-thirds to three-quarters of the mirror's width.
LED mirrors
LED mirrors have built-in lighting and sometimes defoggers. They need power at the right spot.

Color temperature
Neutral white (around 3000K to 3500K) gives true skin tones.
Box location
The existing box may need to be centered.
Side lighting
The most flattering vanity light comes from both sides of the face at eye level. Two sconces flanking a mirror do this best. A single bar above the mirror is easier when only one box exists, and a wide fixture reduces shadows.

Damp-rated fixtures
Bathroom lights should be rated for damp locations, especially near showers.
Mid-century style
Globe lights, simple brass or black bars, and frosted glass suit mid-century bathrooms in Monterey Park. Avoid fixtures that overwhelm a small powder room.
LED mirror features
LED mirrors may include dimming, adjustable color temperature, defoggers and built-in outlets. Some hard-wire to the existing box, others plug in.
Dimmers
A dimmer lets you use bright light for grooming and soft light at night.
Getting the light right
Good bathroom lighting comes from the sides and the front, not just from overhead. A fixture mounted above the mirror throws shadows under the eyes and chin. Side sconces at about face height, or a lighted mirror, light the face evenly.
For a single bar fixture, mounting it around 75 to 80 inches above the floor and choosing one about three-quarters the width of the mirror works for most bathrooms.
Color temperature and color rendering
Look for LED fixtures or bulbs around 2700K to 3000K for a warm, flattering light, or 3500K for a slightly crisper look. Avoid very cool 5000K light in a bathroom unless you prefer it. A high color rendering index, 90 or above, makes skin tones and makeup look natural. Dimmable fixtures give flexibility for night use.
LED mirrors
Lighted mirrors combine the mirror and the light source. Many include anti-fog heating pads, touch dimmers and adjustable color temperature. Before ordering, check whether the mirror is hardwired or plug-in, and where its wiring entry is.
A hardwired mirror needs a junction box behind it in the right place. If the old vanity light box is above the mirror location, it can often be extended down inside the wall, then covered with a blank plate or hidden by the mirror itself.
Moisture ratings
Fixtures near showers and tubs should carry a damp or wet location rating. Check the label. Over a vanity, damp-rated is usually enough. Inside a shower enclosure, a wet-rated fixture is required.
Mounting boxes and old walls
Older bathroom light boxes are sometimes small, loose or mounted off center from the sink. We can relocate a box or add a new one for centered sconces. In plaster walls, we cut carefully to avoid cracking, and we use old-work boxes that clamp to the wall. Heavy LED mirrors need solid anchors or blocking, not just drywall anchors.
Our steps:
- Turn off the circuit at the breaker and test that it is dead
- Remove the old fixture and check the box and wiring
- Install a mounting bracket rated for the new fixture's weight
- Connect wires, including the ground, and tuck them into the box
- Mount the fixture, install bulbs if needed, and test
Old wiring
Mid-century homes may have older wiring with brittle insulation or no ground wire. If the wiring at the box crumbles when touched, or if there is no ground, we will point that out before installing a new fixture. Bathroom receptacles should be GFCI protected; if yours are not, that is a good upgrade to add at the same visit.
Switches
A dimmer for the vanity and a separate switch for the fan make a bathroom easier to use. If the fan and lights are on one switch now, see our bathroom fan and vent guide. Ceiling lighting is covered in recessed lighting in mid-century ceilings.
Mirror size and placement
A mirror is usually sized a few inches narrower than the vanity, centered over the sink or sinks. Its top typically sits somewhere around 70 to 75 inches off the floor, but the right height depends on who uses the bathroom. If the medicine cabinet is recessed into the wall, replacing it with a surface mirror leaves a hole to patch; replacing it with a new recessed cabinet keeps the storage.
Many lighted mirrors and lighted medicine cabinets come in common rough opening sizes, so measure the opening before shopping. Check that the faucet handle and the spout do not hit a mirror hung low.
Planning for outlets
Bathrooms need at least one outlet near the sink, and it should have GFCI protection. Lighted mirrors with built-in outlets or defoggers draw small loads, but plan where cords for hair tools will run so they do not cross the sink.
What our install involves
We remove the old fixture, install the new light or mirror, and test it. See vanity lights and LED mirrors.
