Repair or replace?
Jams, flange leaks, and loose drain connections are worth fixing. If the unit leaks from its body or the motor is burned out, replace it. I'll tell you which it is first.
What horsepower should I get?
For most homes a 1/2 to 3/4 HP unit is plenty. Bigger units grind faster and are quieter, but they cost more. I can install the one you pick.
Can you install a disposal where there wasn't one?
Usually, yes. It needs a switched outlet under the sink and a drain that fits. Send a photo of the cabinet and I'll tell you what it takes.
What shouldn't go in a disposal?
Grease, bones, fruit pits, coffee grounds in bulk, and stringy peels like celery are the usual causes of jams and clogs.
