Do I need an asbestos test?
For a ceiling put up before the 1980s, yes. A small sample goes to a lab, and the result decides the next step. Scraping starts only after a clean result.
Scrape or skim coat?
Scraping takes the texture off. A skim coat covers it with a smooth layer. Which is better depends on the ceiling's condition and the test result.
How messy is it?
Messy. The room gets sealed with plastic, floors covered, and cleaned up at the end. Plan on not using the room for a day or two.
How long does one room take?
Usually one to two days for a small room, counting dry time between coats.
